What The Fungi?

This project, Cesar Hikes, is inspired by the way mycelium fosters interconnection and support in ecosystems.

As a self-taught ethnomycologist and artist with roots in México, I create spaces for mindful connection through guided forest walks, Art-Fungi Workshops, and talks about the Kingdom of Fungi.

My approach is rooted in promoting observation, encouraging pauses from the demands of modern life, and creating distance from the overwhelming noise of social media. Just as mycelium links plants, shares nutrients, and sustains forests, these experiences weave invisible threads, connecting people to place, to each other, and to the quiet wisdom of the natural world.

My work includes a series of books, with the first one completed"What the Fungi? A Wee Introduction to the Fungi Kingdom."

My projects blend storytelling, folklore, and nature exploration to encourage mindfulness and community connection. Each piece I create begins as something I imagine for myself, something I would wear, even if only in my mind. Although I don’t wear earrings, I design them as talismans, meant to spark questions and whispers of connection to the fungi world.

My hope is that curiosity will take root, growing into interest, then understanding, and finally, a deep respect and admiration for nature, for the quiet, persistent magic of life.
